Hair care alternatives

Hey insiders, welcome to the well!

I am not a loyal user of any specific shampoo/conditioner combination. Each time I restock my supply, I pick another brand. I’m a bit of a nomad when it comes to hair care products. Nothing has wowed me.

My sister mentioned to me that she has started using baking soda and honey instead of shampoo and conditioner, which sounds beautifully simple, affordable, and accessible. Sometimes I am turned off by the amount of effort and preparation that can be required of DIY body/hair care, which is especially true for me lately since I’m super-duper busy (who isn’t?).

To use baking soda as a shampoo you will want to combine one tablespoon of baking soda with one cup of warm water in a bottle… you can mix it by shaking the bottle. Also, take note that this ratio is not set in stone. I’ve seen different ratios recommended on the internet, so experiment and see what’s right for you.

When using honey to condition your hair, it is important to note that honey naturally lightens your locks. You can make this conditioner using just honey and some apple cider vinegar. The ratio should be something like two parts vinegar to one part honey, but definitely feel free to experiment to see what works with your gorgeous head o’ hair.

I have not tried this yet, but I am going to soon… and I’m super excited! Have you tried any DIY shampoo and conditioner recipes? How has it worked out for you?

Thanks for stopping by the well, have a great night!

  1. Thanks for sharing this. I do use apple cider vinegar on my hair to get rid of build up on the hair. I am also making my own shampoo and conditioner from herbs essential oils. Coconut oil is very conditioning too!
